TENETS

The majority of Nomromism's beliefs are taken from other pre-existing religions, ideologies, movements, and philosophies and appear in most, if not all, of them in one form or another. These ''rules'' are not musts or requirements so much as they are advice, aspirations, and guidelines that would be beautiful if regularly followed. You do not have to live by them but it would be nice if you could. In essence, they can all be simplified into one very short, sweet, and simple sentence: don't be a jerk. Not to others, not to nature, and not to yourself.

"All faiths insist that compassion is the test of true spirituality and that it brings us into relation with the transcendence we call God, Brahman, Nirvana, or Dao. Each has formulated its own version of what is sometimes called the Golden Rule, ‘Do not treat others as you would not like them to treat you,’ or in its positive form, ‘Always treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself.’ Further, they all insist that you cannot confine your benevolence to your own group; you must have concern for everybody — even your enemies." Our international mission statement is very clear on this point when it says we will "meet human needs in [Jesus'] name without discrimination". Anyone who comes through our doors will be welcomed with love and service, based on their need and our capacity to provide." (Salvation Army mission statement)

Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

"I’d really rather you didn’t use my existence as a means to oppress, subjugate, punish, eviscerate, and/or, you know, be mean to others. I don’t require sacrifices and purity is for drinking water, not people." (8 I’d Really Rather You Didn’ts)

"I’d really rather you didn’t judge people for the way they look, or how they dress, or the way they talk, or, well, just play nice, okay? Oh, and get this in your thick heads: woman = person. Man = person. Samey-samey. One is not better than the other." (8 I’d Really Rather You Didn’ts)

Church of the Last Testament

"Be pure in your words. For what has been heard does not litter, but what comes out of you can turn your soul into a vessel of stench. He, who lets mockery to another one out of his mouth, steps on the path leading to the dark of the abyss." (Last Testament, Directions, 2)

"Be pure in your thoughts. For thought is not only a prerequisite of the physical deeds, but it is a deed itself, emitting either warmth or cold.

David Shayler

"My message is very simple and very pure. It's love God with all your heart, mind and soul; love your neighbour as yourself. There's only one piece of knowledge you've got to get right in the spiritual journey and that's about who God's chosen one is. Apart from that, you've got to realize that you take responsibility yourself, you don't blame others, you share unconditionally. If we all did that, the world would be a much safer and more peaceful place." (David Shayler)

"The compassionate heart of his majesty finds no pleasure in cruelties or in causing sorrow to others; he is ever sparing of the lives of his subjects, wishing to bestow happiness upon all." (Ain-i-Akbari)

"As most men are fettered by bonds of tradition, and by imitating ways followed by their fathers...everyone continues, without investigating their arguments and reasons, to follow the religion in which he was born and educated, thus excluding himself from the possibility of ascertaining the truth, which is the noblest aim of the human intellect. Therefore we associate at convenient seasons with learned men of all religions, thus deriving profit from their exquisite discourses and exalted aspirations." (Akbar the Great)

"Miracles occur in the temples of every creed." (Akbar the Great)

"My dear child… with all of God’s creatures, I am at peace; why should I permit myself, under any consideration, to be the cause of molestation or aggression to any one? Besides, are not five parts in six of mankind either Hindus or aliens to the faith; and were I to be governed by motives of the kind suggested in your inquiry, what alternative can I have but to put them all to death? I have thought it therefore my wisest plan to let these men alone." (Akbar the Great)

"My son, I love my own religion... but the Hindu minister also loves his religion. If he wants to spend money on his religion, what right do I have to prevent him... Does he not have the right to love the thing that is his very own?" (Akbar the Great)

Existentialism

"When we say that man chooses for himself, we do mean that every one of us must choose himself; but by that we also mean that in choosing for himself he chooses for all men. For in effect, of all the actions a man may take in order to create himself as he wills to be, there is not one which is not creative, at the same time, of an image of man such as he believes he ought to be. To choose between this or that is at the same time to affirm the value of that which is chosen; for we are unable ever to choose the worse. What we choose is always the better; and nothing can be better for us unless it is better for all." (Existentialism is a Humanism, pp. 291–292)

"We cannot avoid using power, cannot escape the compulsion to afflict the world, so let us, cautious in diction and mighty in contradiction, love powerfully." (Martin Buber)

Feminism

"Because man and woman are the complement of one another, we need woman's thought in national affairs to make a safe and stable government." (Elizabeth Cady Stanton)

"But when at last woman stands on an even platform with man, his acknowledged equal everywhere, with the same freedom to express herself in the religion and government of the country, then, and not until then, will he be able to legislate as wisely and generously for her as for himself." (Elizabeth Cady Stanton)

"So long as women are slaves, men will be knaves." (Elizabeth Cady Stanton)

"The happiest people I have known have been those who gave themselves no concern about their own souls, but did their uttermost to mitigate the miseries of others." (Elizabeth Cady Stanton)

"The new religion will teach the dignity of human nature and its infinite possibilities for development. It will teach the solidarity of the race -- that all must rise and fall as one. Its creed will be justice, liberty, equality for all the children of earth." (Elizabeth Cady Stanton)

"To live for a principle, for the triumph of some reform by which all mankind are to be lifted up—to be wedded to an idea—may be, after all, the holiest and happiest of marriages." (Elizabeth Cady Stanton)

"To throw obstacles in the way of a complete education is like putting out the eyes; to deny the rights of property is like cutting off the hands. To refuse political equality is to rob the ostracized of all self-respect, of credit in the market place, of recompense in the world of work, of a voice in choosing those who make and administer the law, a choice in the jury before whom they are tried, and in the judge who decides their punishment." (Elizabeth Cady Stanton)

"We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal." (Elizabeth Cady Stanton)

"The basic freedom of the world is woman's freedom. A free race cannot be born of slave mothers. A woman enchained cannot choose but give a measure of that bondage to her sons and daughters. No woman can call herself free who does not own and control her body. No woman can call herself free until she can choose consciously whether she will or will not be a mother." (Margaret Sanger)

"The church has ever opposed the progress of woman on the ground that her freedom would lead to immorality. We ask the church to have more confidence in women. We ask the opponents of this movement to reverse the methods of the church, which aims to keep women moral by keeping them in fear and in ignorance, and to inculcate into them a higher and truer morality based upon knowledge. And ours is the morality of knowledge. If we cannot trust woman with the knowledge of her own body, then I claim that two thousand years of Christian teaching has proved to be a failure." (Margaret Sanger)

"I do not wish [women] to have power over men; but over themselves." (Mary Wollstonecraft)

"It is vain to expect virtue from women till they are in some degree independent of men." (Mary Wollstonecraft)

"Till women are more rationally educated, the progress in human virtue and improvement in knowledge must receive continual checks." (Mary Wollstonecraft)

"Women ought to have representatives, instead of being arbitrarily governed without any direct share allowed them in the deliberations of government." (Mary Wollstonecraft)

"The prevalence of high mortality rates at illegal "abortion mills" strengthens, rather than weakens, the State's interest in regulating the conditions under which abortions are performed. Moreover, the risk to the woman increases as her pregnancy continues. Thus, the State retains a definite interest in protecting the woman's own health and safety when an abortion is proposed at a late stage of pregnancy." (Roe v. Wade, Section VII)

"A state criminal abortion statute of the current Texas type, that excepts from criminality only a life-saving procedure on behalf of the mother, without regard to pregnancy stage and without recognition of the other interests involved, is violative of the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment." (Roe v. Wade, Section XI)

"In the criminal code we find no feminine pronouns, as "He," "His," "Him," we are arrested, tried and hung, but singularly enough, we are denied the highest privileges of citizens, because the pronouns "She," "Hers" and "Her," are not found in the constitutions. It is a pertinent question, if women can pay the penalties of their crimes as "He," why may they not enjoy the privileges of citizens as "He"?" (The Woman’s Bible)

"Truth is the only safe ground to stand upon." (The Woman’s Bible)

"Yes, I am a Free Lover. I have an inalienable, constitutional and natural right to love whom I may, to love as long or as short a period as I can; to change that love every day if I please, and with that right neither you nor any law you can frame have any right to interfere." (Victoria Woodhull)

"But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round — apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that — as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys." "Humanize, Equalize and Spiritualize." (Mahadev Govind Ranade)

"The preamble to the Regulation says that women were employed wholesale to entice and take away the wives or female children for purposes of prostitution, and it was common practice among husbands and fathers to desert their families and children. Public conscience there was none, and in the absence of conscience it was futile to expect moral indignation against the social wrongs. Indeed the Brahmins were engaged in defending every wrong for the simple reason that they lived on them. They defended Untouchability which condemned millions to the lot of the helot. They defended caste, they defended female child marriage and they defended enforced widowhood—the two great props of the Caste system. They defended the burning of widows, and they defended the social system of graded inequality with its rule of hypergamy which led the Rajputs to kill in their thousands the daughters that were born to them. What shames! What wrongs! Can such a Society show its face before civilized nations? Can such a society hope to survive?" (Mahadev Govind Ranade)

"We have above all to learn what is to bear and forbear-to bear ridicule, insults, even personal injuries at times, and forebear from returning abuse for abuse. We affirm that we meet God in many different ways and that the human being is created in the divine image." (Rabbi David Rosen)

He censureth not his neighbor; he believeth not the tales of envy and malevolence; neither repeateth he their slanders. He forgiveth the injuries of men, he wipeth them from his remembrance; revenge and malice have no place in his heart. For evil he returneth not evil, he hateth not even his enemies, but requiteth their injustice with a friendly admonition. The griefs and anxieties of men excite his compassion; he endeavoreth to alleviate the weight of their misfortunes, and the pleasure of success rewardeth his labor. He calmeth the fury, he healeth the quarrels of angry men, and preventeth the mischiefs of strife and animosity. He promoteth in his neighborhood peace and good will, and his name is repeated with praise and benedictions." (Holy Koran of the Moorish Science Temple of America, Chapter XXXII, 3-9)

"God loves all races equally, because they are all His children. He who hates human beings is contrary to God’s heart. He who disrespects foreigners and regards them with prejudice defies God’s heart. “Hate the sin, but do not hate the sinner”, this is a common saying. But he who goes God’s way should not even hate the sin, but, looking on it, pity the sinner. God hates sin; human beings have not the right to hate the sins of other people. Because every human being is full of faults and impurities, human beings do not have the right to hate one another. Have pity for the fault, therefore, and endeavour to lead the sinner to good." (Divine Signposts, Part Two, Chapter 3, verse 391-396)

Even the evil love those who love them. Follow God in all things, for every human being is a child of God. Love therefore every human being in the world, as God loves you."
